Madagascar has a 3-5-4-3 formal education structure. There are three years of pre-primary school, which has an official entry age of three and is referred to as éducation pré-primaire. Primary school, which is known as éducation fondamentale du premier cycle, has an official entry age of six and a duration of five grades. At the end of the cycle, students receive the certificat d`études primaires élémentaires (CEPE). Secondary school is divided into two cycles: lower secondary and upper secondary.
Lower secondary, which is known as éducation fondamentale du deuxième cycle, consists of grades 6-9 and culminates in the brevet d`études du premier cycle (BEPC); upper secondary, which is known as enseignement secondaire, consists of grades 10-12 and culminates in the Baccalauréat de l`enseignement secondaire (Lycée). In addition, Madagascar has three lower secondary vocational education tracks that last up to three years, and two upper secondary vocational education tracks that each last three years (ISCED 2011 mapping for 2013 school year).
